Proponents of compulsory schooling believe that it is essential for kids to go to school because they get to “socialize” with other peers. What would happen if school wasn’t mandatory? One of the things that would go wrong, people say, would be that kids would start getting lonely because there isn’t a place for all the youth to meet up. That’s all a load of bull. Here’s why.
First, if school is all about socializing, why aren’t kids allowed to talk in class? I understand that part of the purpose of school is to learn, but there have to be better ways to learn than the “shut up and listen” method we still practice today. If a student is caught talking, then said student will be subject to punishment, which can be severe. Most humans, regardless of whether their extroverted or introverted, are generally social creatures. Why do schools try to say when we can socialize and when not?
Second, perhaps one of the most infamous features of high school is the clique system. Certain people hang out with certain people, and honestly, it feels soul crushing. If school is about meeting people, why is there a fictional segregation system in place? Socializing in school is extremely rigid. There are certain people and groups you just aren’t allowed to approach, and if you do, you’ll be ran out of the conversation. Why? Why do people separate themselves on one shared feature? Why do people take this so seriously anyway? When it comes to socializing, schools are a bad place to do it, and cliques re-enforce that.
Third, sometimes, socializing is forced. If you happen to hang out by yourself, or don’t have a lot of friends, believe me, you’ll be approached by many students and teachers on why you aren’t socializing. Some people generally prefer to be by themselves, but doing such is a sign that the kid feels “left out”. It all stems from a lack of understanding to the concept of introversion, but also social anxiety (a condition school is great at causing inside a person). Generally, introverts prefer not being around large groups of people, but avoiding such large groups is seen as antisocial.
Trying to keep school in order to help kids “socialize” is such a bad argument because it lacks depth and a true analysis on what goes on in the “social side” of high school. The fact that socializing in the first place is controlled, the cliques, and sometimes the forced socialization are all reasons why socializing in school is such bullshit.
